WA’s top cop has urged officers not to park their cars in front of mobile speed cameras after the police union threatened to direct its members to do so.
The WA Police Union said it might direct members to issue cautions rather than fines for low-level traffic offences after polling on Tuesday showed that most West Australians support both tactics.
WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said while low-level traffic matters are at the officer’s discretion, he wanted to see coppers putting road safety first.
“Fines and traffic cameras - I know they do certainly cause angst to the public as far as paying money - but they are there for road safety and that is an important part,” he told 6PR.
